10 penneth
10 lessons to (hopefully) make you a better Graphic Designer.

Anyone who knows me will be the first to tell you that I've always got something to say. And by 'something to say' they probably mean that I'm always whining about something—moan, grumble, hiss, whinge. That's me. I do it for everything, so why stop at Graphic Design? Answer is, I didn't.

10 Penneth (if you're not sure what I mean by penneth follow this little asterisk sitting on the shoulder of this*) is an accompaniment to a lecture series that I have given to students of Graphic Design and takes the form of ten (for lack of a better word—and I can't understand why there isn't one) maxims. These maxims take the form of short essays, each one being a lesson that's an important thing to learn in order to help the students become better Graphic Designers, and in order for them to better understand the profession in which they are entering.

Now this is already a hard enough sell so I'm just going to fire into what the hell they are—hopefully aiding in my ineptitude of explaining them:

Graphic Design isn't interesting.

Design is a joke.

Limits are possibilities.

Ideas are whores.

Apple. Apple.

Find faults not friends.

Eat with your eyes.

Never become a professional.

It's always better to be honest.

Value freedom not genius.

Quite strange some of them I know, but honestly, they all do have a point, points that are discussed in the only way I know how—bluntly and openly. And as with 12IN12, I dished them out for free. A courtesy that I will hereafter extend to any student that would like one.

So then, would you like one? A lovely (sorry) garish booklet just for you, from me? All day-glo-riffic and head-ache inducing? Well, you can have one if you want. Well, as I said—paragraph reverse—you can have one for free. Ok there's a catch. To get one for free you'll have to attend the lecture—big catch, I'm sorry.

Although, a beautiful bundle of 10 Penneth and 12IN12 can be found in Magma Bookstores in London and Manchester for the combined price of £5.00.

But if you're from what us islanders like to call "overseas" and would like to buy a copy (or if you simply live nowhere near Manchester or London, you can get one for free—ish.

So it's not quite free, I'm afraid that there would be a little cost to pay—a nice, deserving fee for the good people of Royal Mail (good when they're not picketing—to deliver the shiny, big-ish parcel to you: and at a not-so-bank-breaking cost of £3.50 (£5.00 outside UK) you'll still be able to get the round of beers in and the weeks supply of Pot Noodles.

Now, don't be shy, if you want one just ask.

*Penneth: Oldish-English saying when someone gives you his thoughts and opinions on what you should do about a situation or dilemma. It suggests that the opinion may not be worth much, but might nevertheless help you in your decision making. As in "I asked him and he gave me his two-penneth, but was it bloody heck useful."
